the best thing i ate this week: sushi zone

I'm the kind of person that could eat sushi everyday. For every meal. I really never get sick of it. So when I heard about Sushi Zone, off the beaten path in the Mission, I knew I had to try it. With only 10 seats and a notoriously long wait, Sushi Zone was worth it.

We started with the albacore stuffed jalapeños and they were pretty much amazing, as you can tell by the photo above. A generous serving of albacore stuffed into a hallowed out jalapeño and topped with an insanely flavorful sauce and scallions. We were beyond pleased. 

Then, of course, we ordered a million sushi rolls, all standard but perfectly fresh and some of the best sushi I've ever had.

Despite the wait and tiny space, I'll be back sooner rather than later.

Sushi Zone: 1815 Market Street; San Francisco

I'm a sucker for good sushi. It's something I could eat every single day and never get sick of (though my bank account would definitely not be pleased). After asking around for some suggestions, a few friends mentioned Domo Sushi in Hayes Valley and after a small bit of research (I just had to), I decided it'd be worth my while.

Located amidst some of the cutest shops and specialty stores in the city, Domo Sushi serves some of the freshest and tastiest rolls and sashimi I've ever had. While there for lunch, I sampled the Spyder Roll and Spicy Tuna Crudo... and then may or may not have ordered an additional Spicy Tuna Roll.

My feasting partner-in-crime tried the Rainbow Roll and it definitely tasted as good as it looked.

Needless to say, I will be back. With only a few tables in the restaurant, going around 1:30 p.m. for lunch was a good call. I imagine the wait would be quite lengthy for dinner.

While I realize the idea of Mexican/Sushi fusion is slightly repulsing and most definitely odd, there's nothing that intrigues me more. Juan Chou in South Park really got this one right. Plus, they have some great happy hour deals. Chips, salsa and margs while I wait for my sushi rolls? Count me in.

katsuya opens in san diego (!!!)

I had been to a Katsuya back in the day in LA and when I heard one was opening here in San Diego, needless to say I was ecstatic. My mom's in town this weekend and I figured it'd be the perfect place to start our food-filled feastly weekend. From my previous Katsuya experience, though everything was to die for, I particularly remember the soft-shell crab being something to write home about. Even so, I was not prepared for the epic feast that was about to occur. This was most definitely the best meal I've had in a while. Every single thing we ordered [and we ordered a lot] was better than the next. From the green iced tea to the kobe beef skewers, I was in heaven. Though it's hard to choose which dish was the winner, I'm going to have to go with the miso-marinated cod. The fish cut like butter on the inside but had a semi-crispy and sweet layer on the outside. The asian-inspired flavors melded perfectly together and every bite of this delectable dish was like an explosion of happiness in your mouth. Call me dramatic ['cause I am] but it's true. This was the best dish i've eaten all year!!

After finishing the best meal of 2012 [maybe 2011 too], we had to stop ordering food and leave [though I could have eaten everything on that menu]. I recommend a reservation as the newly opened Katsuya San Diego is most likely on the fast track to becoming one of the best restaurants and trendiest hot spots in the area. needless to say, I will be back soon [tomorrow maybe... just kidding... maybe...].
